As we head toward the American Thanksgiving holiday, it’s an ideal time to interview a few of our agents about being a virtual business owner. Our first interview is with Kimmie Heard, and here is what she had to say:
“I’ve been at Working Solutions for six years now, having come from 15 years in a corporate tech support environment. After my position was outsourced and I completed training my replacements, I knew I didn’t want to return to corporate America. I looked around for a bit and my sister, who is a virtual agent for another company, suggested that I try being a virtual agent myself. Fortunately, I was able to get a position with Working Solutions.
My favorite things about being a virtual agent are, first, I was able to home school my teenagers. Having the flexibility to do so was a big bonus for me. Unfortunately, my father became ill later. Being with Working Solutions gave me the flexibility to care for him during an extended hospitalization.
Of course, with all good things come some challenges. My family and friends had to be taught that I was really working, even though I was at home. They had to learn that they could not interrupt me whenever they wanted. I had to help them understand I was not available to drop them off at the airport or just chat on the phone.
I would never go back to a corporate job. I get to pick my schedule, I feel well compensated for what I do, and I have lots of freedom.
A benefit for me is the community. I am a shy person, and having the opportunity to connect with other virtual agents has helped me come out of my shell. I have met other agents in my area, and even attended a lunch held in my area. I use tools like SKYPE to interact with others, and it’s given me a whole new outlook. Being at Working Solutions, I’ve come out of my shell more than I ever did at my corporate job.”
